In recent years, two-dimensional conjugated polymers have become a research hotspot in the field of polymer photovoltaic materials due to their advantages of wide absorption and high mobility, and from the perspective of material design, without affecting the absorption spectrum and mobility of polymers, Effectively regulating its molecular energy level is one of the most effective ways to achieve breakthroughs in this type of material.

Therefore, finding a simple and effective method to adjust the energy levels of polymer molecules is a very important task.

With the strong support of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researchers from the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Physics and Chemistry of the Institute of Chemical Industry have rationally used the inducing effect of alkoxy groups to optimize the substitution position. The meta-alkoxyphenyl group is introduced into the side chain of the two-dimensional conjugated polymer, and the HOMO energy level of the corresponding polymer is decreased by 0.25 eV without substantially affecting the absorption spectrum and the mobility, and the corresponding photovoltaic device is opened. The voltage increased by 0.18V, the energy conversion efficiency increased from 5.6% to 7.5%, and the increase rate exceeded 30%.

This result breaks the traditional design idea of ​​alkoxy as an electron-donating group and provides experimental basis for fine tuning of high-efficiency polymer photovoltaic materials. The corresponding findings were published in the recent "Advanced Materials" (Adv. Mater. 2014, 26, 2089–2095). After the article was published, it was reported consecutively by the famous science websites Science Daily, Nanowerk and the daily fusion, and gave a high evaluation. They believe that "this is a simple and inexpensive chemical modification method that can effectively reduce the HOMO energy level of a polymer without affecting the absorption and charge transport properties of the polymer, thereby improving the energy conversion efficiency."
